Retouching is much like oil painting. You need to understand how light and color work in real life to make it believable.

I have been retouching for almost 30 years. When I started, my tool was an airbrush and there were no undos, just do overs. Now with PhotoShop as a tool, anything can be done. Some of the work is not so much retouching as it is fabrication. Using photos as source material, I can design and execute an entirely new composition.
